In the early 1980s, Dr. Martin Katz of Educational Testing Service introduced a revolutionary, values-based theory of career decision making. The basic tenet of this theory is that people look for certain values in their work and that careers can be rated on the degree that they reflect these values. Dr. Katz, his associates, and many others had been researching and testing decision theory and how it relates to career choices for 30 years and the results came to fruition in SIGI PLUS. Based on this research, SIGI PLUS approached career decision-making as follows:

• Career decision making is a lifelong activity that can be learned through use of a carefully constructed system that allows for individual choice and flexibility.
• People increasingly change careers but rarely change their career values.
• Career values can apply to a broad number of job or career categories.
• People, even young people, have an understanding of their basic career values. When supplied with real life examples, students can relate them to the values that are most important to them.
• Studies suggest that stated career values (when a person is helped to define them) are superior to interest inventories as a predictor of eventual career choice.
• Other studies suggest that people often choose answers on interest inventories that they recognize will support a preconceived career choice. This time and energy is better directed in SIGI PLUS.
• With SIGI PLUS the experience and self-awareness of the user is respected. The user is not subjected to dozens of simplistic questions when he/she is capable of directly identifying work related values if properly guided.
