Definition of Occupation

The role of a Social Worker is to enhance the well-being of people in need by connecting them with the tools and information needed to improve function, and make progress in their lives. Social Workers are professionals who care about people and are devoted to relieving suffering and improving the lives of others. They help their clients not only cope with situations, but also help them find information and services to help them solve problems and change their situations. Through guidance, counseling, referrals, and advocacy they help people with a variety of problems such as substance abuse, terminal illnesses, disability, unemployment, mental and emotional disorders, physical abuse, and homelessness.

There are many different types of Social Workers devoted to specific groups of people. These include School Social Worker, Medical Social Worker, Geriatric Social Worker, Forensic Social Worker, Psychiatric Social Worker, and Clinical Social Worker. These positions are found in a great variety of settings, and serve at many levels of government.
