Phlebotomist

Definition of Occupation

Phlebotomy is a basic medical technician position. The main task for a phlebotomist is to draw blood, which requires a basic knowledge of anatomy and aseptic techniques. Phlebotomists draw blood, assemble equipment, verify and record the identity of patients, and communicate with patients about the procedure to help allay their fears. They may also take vital signs, test blood samples, interpret test results, and transport samples to a laboratory. Phlebotomy is not a good career choice for the squeamish, or for those who don't enjoy working with blood and veins.
