Agronomist

Definition of Occupation

Agronomists are plant and soil scientists who specialize in producing and improving crops used for food, fuel, feed, fiber, and reclamation. They are generally focused on increasing the quality and amount of food produced for a nation's food supply. They conduct experiments and develop methods to create more and healthier foods, manage environmental impact of agriculture, and create energy from plants.

They may specialize in areas such as plant physiology, soil classification, crop rotation, weed and pest control, irrigation, and plant breeding. They can be researchers, teachers, and consultants. They often must have knowledge and understanding of laws that regulate how crops must be produced.

They provide information and recommendations to governments, farmers, and other landowners regarding the best use of land, plant growth, and methods to avoid or correct problems such as erosion.
