Cytogenetic Technologists

Definition of Occupation

Cytogenetics is the specialized area of laboratory medicine involving the study of normal and abnormal chromosomes and their relationship to human development and disease. Cytogenetic technologists analyze microscopic chromosomes found in tissue specimens such as amniotic fluid, bone marrow, and blood to aid in the study, diagnosis, or treatment of genetic diseases. They make microscopic evaluations of the chromosome number and morphology, and prepare reports of the findings for physicians, thereby aiding in the diagnosis and prognosis of certain conditions.
