They also keep a tally of missing items and record the condition of damaged items.

For imported or exported freight, they verify that the proper customs paperwork is in order. Cargo and freight agents often track shipments electronically, using bar codes, and answer customers' questions about the status of their shipments.

They may also coordinate the activities of international traffic divisions of import-export agencies and negotiate the settlements between foreign and domestic shippers.
