Mental Health Counselors
Definition of Occupation
Counsel with emphasis on prevention. Counselors use interviews, counseling sessions, tests, or other methods in evaluating and advising clients. Work with individuals and groups to promote optimum mental health. May help individuals deal with addictions and substance abuse; family, parenting, and marital problems; suicide; stress management; problems with self-esteem; and issues associated with aging and mental and emotional health. Counselors assist people with personal, family, educational, mental health, and career decisions and problems. Their duties depend on the individuals they serve and on the settings in which they work.
