Cardiovascular Technologist

Definition of Occupation

Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of heart and blood vessel ailments. Prepares and monitors patients during procedures. Provides oral or written summary of technical findings to physicians responsible for interpretation and medical diagnoses. May specialize in invasive cardiology (e.g., assisting with cardiac catheterizations--inserting catheter into patient's blood vessel and guiding it to the heart to determine the presence of arterial blockage, angioplasties to open arteries clogged by plaque, and implanting of pacemakers), noninvasive cardiology (e.g., conducting echocardiograms--ultrasounds of the heart) and noninvasive vascular ultrasound (tests to evaluate blood flow in veins and arteries). Most work in medical facilities or physicians' offices.

DO NOT CONFUSE with Cardiographic Technician who is only trained to perform EKG testing.
