Substance Abuse Counselor
Definition of Occupation
Provides counseling and guidance to clients and their family members to assist them in understanding and coping with substance abuse, addiction and related problems. Performs assessments of clients' needs, motivations and background. Develops treatment plans and conducts individual and group counseling sessions, family sessions and education groups. At entry level without license may perform therapy under close supervision of higher ranking counselor. May work in private practice, government agencies for alcoholism and drug abuse, employee assistance programs in business and industry, educational and correctional institutions, hospitals and treatment centers.
