Definition of Occupation

Diagnoses and treats mental and emotional disorders, whether cognitive, affective, or behavioral, within the context of marriage and family relationships. Applies psychotherapeutic and family systems theories and techniques in the delivery of professional services to individuals, couples, and families for the purpose of treating such diagnosed nervous and mental disorders. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists are able to conduct psychotherapy independently in certain states. May research and teach in field of marriage and family therapy, human development and interpersonal relationships. May work in teams with other healthcare professionals such as family physicians or psychiatrists.
