Definition of Occupation
Takes verbatim reports and prepares transcript of legal proceedings, speeches, conversations, meetings, and other events when written accounts of spoken words are necessary for correspondence, records or legal proof. Official court reporters record proceedings in courtroom setting or capture proceedings in government agencies and governing bodies at all levels. Freelance reporters may take depositions for attorneys in offices and document proceedings of meetings, conventions and other private activities. Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) reporters may work in classroom settings aiding people who are deaf/hard of hearing or board meetings where an accurate transcript is required. May also work for television networks or cable stations captioning live television programming, news, emergency broadcasts, sporting events and other types of programming for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Many court reporters work as independent contractors.NOTE: Technology used in this profession is evolving rapidly.
