Definition of Occupation
Applies scientific principles and technological practices for the purposes of justice and resolution of criminal, civil and regulatory issues. Searches for, collects, packages, photographs and examines evidence. Performs chemical, physical and other laboratory analysis of physical evidence. Interprets results of findings and presents results to those conducting investigations and to the courts. May testify as expert witness on evidence or on crime laboratory analyses. Major areas of specialization include DNA and serology, toxicology, controlled substances, questioned documents, trace analysis and other comparative examinations, firearms, arson and explosives, latent prints and accident reconstruction. In smaller laboratories may work in several areas. Most work for local, state or federal government.
