Ceramic Tile Layer

Definition of Occupation

Lays ceramic tiles in specially prepared bases to form durable, waterproof and easily cleaned surfaces on floors, walls, ceilings, countertops, pools, decks, patios etc. May also lay tiles for purely decorative effect. About half of all tile layers are employed by tile contractors; the others are self-employed.

NOTE: Ceramic tiles are made commercially by pressing wet dust into molds then drying, glazing (to prevent water absorption and add color) in most cases and firing at high temperatures; others are made by hand and often fired at lower heat; principal types of tile are porcelain, wall, quarry, pavers, mosaics, saltillo and specialty--each requires slightly different installation method.
