Definition of Occupation

Uses mathematical modeling and other scientific methods to help improve the effectiveness of operations, system design, decisions and management. Develops scientifically based information that gives insight and guides decision-making. Many assist management with problem solving, policy setting, planning, performance measurement, or control. Some assist non-managerial clients, such as engineers or consumers, with decisions. Others work on related services, products, or software--especially strategic decision support systems, which play a vital role in a growing number of organizations. Contributes to diverse organizations (including business, military, government, nonprofits) and diverse specialties (such as finance, marketing, production, logistics, transportation, telecommunications, military operations, public policy). Some teach and do research in universities. Many professionals in this field become independent consultants.
