Definition of Occupation

ESL: Teaches English to speakers of other languages, usually without using students' native language. May teach in preschool, K-12, higher education, community/adult education/vocational programs, state programs for migrant workers, private language schools etc. Bilingual: Teaches subject matter (mathematics etc.) to groups of students in their native language for part of each school day; teaches them English until they can enter mainstream classes (may team teach English with ESL or mainstream teachers). Most teach in public schools but increasing numbers teach in adult and higher education. Some teach abroad.

NOTE: The term ESOL is sometimes used instead of ESL.
