Diagnostic Medical Sonographer  

Definition of Occupation

Performs medical ultrasound examinations using high frequency sound waves to produce visual images of organs, tissues or blood flow inside the human body. Images are displayed on video monitor and recorded on film or videotape. Collaborates with physicians and other members of health care team. Provides oral or written summary of technical findings to physicians responsible for interpretation and medical diagnoses. Several specialty areas: abdomen, obstetrics/gynecology, adult and pediatric echocardiography, vascular technology, neurosonology and ophthalmology. Most work in medical facilities or doctors' offices; some employed by ultrasound equipment manufacturers, veterinarians and mobile imaging services.
