Prosthetist/Orthotist  

Definition of Occupation

Designs, fabricates and fits custom orthopedic devices prescribed by physicians to restore physiological function and/or normal appearance to patients. Orthotist designs, fabricates and fits orthopedic braces for patients requiring support or correction of limbs or spine due to muscle/bone impairment, disease or deformity. Prosthetist designs, fabricates and fits artificial limbs for those who have suffered amputations due to accidents, congenital birth problems or disabling disease. May be certified orthotist (CO), certified prosthetist (CP) or may have dual certification (CPO). May specialize in pediatric, adult or geriatric care. May also specialize in pedorthics--the fabrication of foot appliances and shoe construction and modification. Major areas of employment: private practice, medical centers, labs and government agencies.

DO NOT CONFUSE with those who sell "off the shelf" orthotic and prosthetic devices.
