Definition of Occupation

Studies human beings, their evolution, culture and social interaction. Studies language, customs, ideas and behavior in different societies and groups--both past and present. Major fields and areas of study include cultural anthropology (recent or contemporary societies, from rural traditional to modern urban), linguistics (origins, structure and evolution of languages), physical anthropology (human and other primate anatomy, fossil evidence, evolution, adaptation, diet, reproductive behavior etc.) and archeology (buried artifacts and remains of past cultures). May specialize in one or more geographic regions of the world or focus on a particular population. About half work in higher education. Increasing numbers work in museums, government, nonprofit organizations, consulting firms, corporations etc. and are called applied or practicing anthropologists.
