Inventory Control Specialist
Definition of Occupation
Uses special programs and methods of calculation to control a company's inventory (amount on hand of raw materials, parts, packaging and finished products). Optimizes costs by keeping inventories at level necessary to fill orders--small enough to avoid excess costs for storage and related expenses yet large enough to allow for transportation economics; accurate forecasting is essential for success. Most work in manufacturing; others work in distribution and retailing companies. In some companies, function of inventory control is combined with production planning, purchasing, logistics, marketing and/or supply chain management.
