Health Information Technician  

Definition of Occupation

Compiles, analyzes, codes and evaluates health information of patients for health care facilities, physicians' offices and insurance companies. Examines medical records for accuracy, reports patient data for reimbursement and creates disease registries for researchers. May specialize in one area of medical record management such as coding or cancer registry.

DO NOT CONFUSE with Health Information Administrator, who needs bachelor's degree. However, in some settings, administrative functions may be assumed by lead technician.
