Metallurgical Engineer
Definition of Occupation
Uses principles of physics, chemistry, engineering and economics to recover metals from ores, improve metallic alloys, predict the behavior of metal and develop manufacturing processes to convert metals and metallic alloys into usable products. Some specialize in materials production, including extraction from ores and refining metals. Others specialize in the design, development and processing of metallic alloys for application in industry. Most work in manufacturing--with large number in the automotive and aerospace industries. A growing number work on semiconductors or electronic packaging issues. Some focus on energy, environmental and recycling problems. May teach or do research.
