Selects and purchases highest quality merchandise or commodities at the best possible price from wholesalers and manufacturers for resale to customers in a store, catalog or on the Internet. May specialize in buying a particular category of merchandise such as men's, women's or children's clothing; furniture, housewares, electronics, sporting goods, foods etc. Coordinates with distribution centers and stores to ensure that merchandise is received at the proper time and is displayed effectively. Analyzes industry trends and sales data to buy according to customers' needs. May be corporate office buyer for department(s) in chain of stores or single department store buyer. Owner or manager of individual specialty store may be responsible for buying merchandise also.
