Air Traffic Control Specialist

Definition of Occupation

Provides weather reports, in-flight assistance, obstruction information and aircraft sequencing to ensure safe, orderly, efficient flow of air traffic both in the air and on the ground. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) divides Air Traffic Control (ATC) into three specializations according to work location: Terminal, Center and Flight Service Station. Terminal and Center Specialists actively control aircraft and airspace. Flight Service Station Specialist, not covered in this profile, provides an advisory service to pilots and relays information between pilots and air traffic control facilities at terminals and en route centers.
