Definition of Occupation

Under the direct supervision of an attorney, provides legal services that save time for the lawyer and money for the client. May specialize in one of many areas such as litigation, corporate law, family law, real estate, probate/estate planning etc. Most work in law firms; others work in corporations, government agencies, legal aid organizations, large real estate firms, unions and other organizations. Cannot engage in unauthorized practice of law.

NOTE: Some people make a distinction between legal assistants and paralegals but most do not. In this profile the terms are used interchangeably.
