Definition of Occupation

A licensed medical or osteopathic physician who pre-operatively evaluates cardiac and respiratory functions as well as other physiologic systems of the body and orders necessary diagnostic tests. Selects and administers anesthetic agents to render patients insensible to pain prior to, during and after surgery or obstetric, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Diagnoses and treats medical complications arising during surgical procedures. Provides pain management for patients with acute and chronic problems. Most practice in hospital operating rooms, ambulatory surgery centers, office-based surgical facilities, labor and delivery suites, intensive care units and pain clinics. Others work in private practices, single- and multi-specialty practices, medical schools and managed care organizations.
