Definition of Occupation

Studies and interprets the history, structure and composition of the earth and its climate. Three areas of specialization. Exploration--identifies water, mineral and energy resources. Surface/Environmental--identifies and assesses conditions in terrestrial, coastal and marine environments and their changes through time, including surface morphology, rivers, glaciers, crustal deformation, sedimentation, and climate. Evaluates and monitors environmental contamination and reclamation. Evaluates potential geohazards to the public/environment from earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, volcanoes, floods, indoor radon etc. Internal/structural--studies igneous, metamorphic and volcanic processes, seismology, magnetism, gravity and tectonics. Engineering--locates and characterizes optimal sites for the construction of major infrastructure and mines; locates, designs and monitors nuclear or other waste disposal sites. May teach, conduct research, work in industry, government or private consulting.
