Definition of Occupation
Builds or repairs metal products or structures by applying pressure and intense localized heat generated by gases, electricity or lasers to melt and fuse parts together in a permanent bond. Fuses steels, alloys and other reactive metals. May be skilled in one or more of the most common methods such as shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux corded arc welding (FCAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) or may specialize in other processes such as laser beam, electron beam or ultrasonic welding. Employed in broad range of industries--e.g., manufacturing, utilities, transportation, and in construction and maintenance of buildings, bridges, highways, refineries etc.DO NOT CONFUSE with Welding Machine Operator who runs automated welding machinery.
