Music Therapist
Definition of Occupation
Uses music within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, psychological, cognitive and social needs of individuals or groups who require special services associated with mental illnesses, developmental disabilities, substance abuse problems, neurological impairments, physical disabilities, chronic illness, stress and pain management. Works with clients to improve communication/language skills, social skills, motor coordination, cognitive and emotional development. Works in schools, psychiatric/medical hospitals, geriatric nursing homes, correctional facilities, substance abuse programs, hospices, rehabilitation/community centers and preschool settings usually as a member of an interdisciplinary team. May be self-employed.
