Diagnoses animal diseases and injuries; treats sick and injured animals. Prevents outbreak and spread of diseases among animals and their potential transmission to people. Majority employed in private companion animal practice (small animal, equine or mixed). Others focus on food-producing animals, aquatic species, regulatory activities, research/development, sales/marketing, education. Major employers are universities, government agencies, the armed services and companies in the food, pharmaceutical, biomedical and veterinarian supply industries.TRENDS: Movement to practice with concentration limited to single species or specialty; emphasis on preventive health care; group rather than solo practice.
