Definition of Occupation

Produces and repairs precision tools, dies (metal forms), jigs and fixtures (special guiding and holding devices) and gauges used to mass-produce identical products. Operates equipment such as mills, grinders, lathes etc. Specializes in fine bench work--smoothing surfaces, fitting components together, assembling, testing and perfecting the operation of the tools. May design tools and dies and assist in planning and writing of computer numerical control (CNC) programs. Employed in industries that manufacture aircraft, appliances, agricultural implements, business machines, electronics, motor vehicles, locks, construction equipment, plastics products etc. Many work in independent shops doing contract work for these firms. Work is similar to that of precision machinist, but more specialized.
