Definition of Occupation

Provides psychological, social and financial counseling services to help empower older people and improve their quality of life. Assesses clients' strengths, needs/problems (e.g., health, finances, nutrition, housing, transportation) and assists them in finding solutions. Arranges and coordinates various support services. May advise family caregivers. Finds ways to engage older individuals in activities or projects that allow them to continue to contribute their expertise. May work with individual clients, plan and administer group programs or work in policy development in governmental and social service agencies. Duties depend on specific employment setting and client population. Major employment areas include state, county, municipal and federal government agencies, hospices, social service agencies and extended care facilities. May teach, go into research, private practice or consulting.
