Definition of Occupation

Professional who plans, organizes and directs work necessary to establish official land, air space and water boundaries. Provides data relevant to the distances, contours, layout and plotting of land areas and subdivisions (including land submerged under bodies of water) and locations of improvements. May utilize field-based measurement techniques, electronic survey instruments, photogrammetry and global satellite positioning systems (G.P.S.). Writes descriptions of land for deeds, leases and other legal documents. May specialize in land boundaries, mineral/oil/gas exploration, municipal mapping, public infrastructure, architectural projects, historical research, geographic information system (G.I.S.) development etc. Major employers are government agencies, utility, construction and consulting companies and private practice.
