Definition of Occupation

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION SPECIALIST: Plans and implements therapeutic recreation programs for people with physical, social, emotional or cognitive disabilities, illnesses or other conditions. Works in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, community recreation departments, residential facilities, special schools, etc. Directs and organizes activities such as sports, dramatics, games and crafts. Regulates contents of program in accordance with clients' capabilities, needs and interests.

LEISURE SERVICE PROFESSIONAL: Plans and manages recreation programs/facilities for general public or particular groups--children, elderly, employees, special interest groups etc. Organizes, promotes and develops interest in activities such as sports, games and social recreation. May work for local or recreation departments, private businesses or nonprofit institutions.

NOTE: Camp counselors, activity instructors etc. work under direction of professionals.
