Definition of Occupation

Measures and fits clients for eyeglasses or contact lenses following prescriptions written by optometrists and ophthalmologists. Usually dispenses glasses; with special certification, may dispense contact lenses; sometimes dispenses special devices for persons with low vision. Helps customers select frames, lenses and lens coatings after considering the prescription, customer's age, occupation, habits and facial features. May fix, adjust and refit broken frames. Instructs clients about adapting to and care of eyeglasses and contact lenses. Some qualified to grind and insert lenses, but task usually delegated to optical lab technicians. Most work in small businesses, doctor's offices or optical chains.
