Clinical Laboratory Scientist  

Definition of Occupation

Performs complex chemical, hematological, microbiologic and immunologic tests on biological specimens taken from patients for use in detecting, diagnosing, monitoring, treating and preventing diseases. Microscopically examines blood, tissue and other body substances to determine presence of abnormal bacteria, fungi, parasites and other microorganisms. Prepares cultures. Monitors and modifies procedures and programs to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results. Correlates clinical laboratory data with other patient information. Corrects malfunctioning test systems and may develop new test procedures. May specialize in clinical chemistry, microbiology, hematology, immunology, hemostasis, urinalysis or immunohematology (blood banking). Typically exercises greater independent judgment than a clinical laboratory technician. Supervises and coordinates other laboratory workers. May work as researcher, educator or in sales or technical service.
