Definition of Occupation

Licensed health care provider who provides primary care to women throughout their lifespan. Services include preconception care/counseling, prenatal care, labor and birth care, postpartum care, family planning services, gynecological exams, newborn care, menopausal management, and counseling in health maintenance and disease prevention. Duties vary depending upon training, licensure and what is allowed in the state in which one practices.

NOTE: There are three types of midwives in the United States: certified nurse-midwives, licensed or certified (direct entry) midwives, and lay or empirical midwives. This profile will concentrate on certified nurse-midwives.
