Definition of Occupation
Sells insurance policies that protect individuals and businesses against unexpected financial losses. Analyzes clients' needs and advises on type and amount of coverage. May specialize in life, health, disability, long-term care, property/casualty or general liability. Multi-line agents sell both property/casualty and life/health policies. May offer financial planning services and be licensed to sell annuities or other securities. Agents ("captive") often work for a single insurance company. Independent agents represent multiple insurance companies and can offer clients a multitude of quotes on a single policy. Brokers represent the buyer and find whichever insurance company has policies that fit a client's needs. May become expert in estate planning, employee benefits, risk management etc.
