Emergency Medical Technician  

Definition of Occupation

Provides emergency medical care to victims of accidents or sudden illness. Transports patients to hospitals in ambulance, helicopter or other emergency vehicle. Most are employed in transport services operated by fire departments, rescue squads, hospitals, municipal or county EMS services and private ambulance firms. Others work in hospital emergency rooms, industrial plants or other medical settings. The level of care EMTs can give is limited by the level of training completed. Three primary training levels: EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate and EMT-Paramedic.
