Bricklayer/Stonemason  

Definition of Occupation

Bricklayer: Works with brick, cement blocks, glassblocks and architectural units that are created for special projects. Builds foundation walls, exterior walls/facings, fireproof interior walls, paving, retaining walls, walkways, chimneys, fireproof industrial furnaces, kilns etc. Is employed by subcontractor or general contractor. Many are self-employed. In some regions, specializes in laying either bricks or blocks.

Stonemason: Usually works with fieldstone, limestone, sandstone, granite or precast masonry panels. May work with marble. Often employed by masonry company that subcontracts to builders specializing in large structures such as houses of worship, prominent government/university buildings, company headquarters, hotels etc.

NOTE: Both groups can be called masons; members of either may specialize in historic preservation.
