Definition of Occupation

Licensed professional who works independently, but under dentist's supervision. Provides clinical, therapeutic and educational services designed to promote healthy teeth and surrounding tissues. Scope of practice depends on state laws, employment situation and education. May be employed in offices/facilities specializing in periodontics (gums), orthodontics (braces), pedodontics (children) or general dentistry. Others work in public health agencies, hospitals, long term care facilities, managed care, school based programs and dental supply sales.

DO NOT CONFUSE with dental assistant who assists dentist at chair-side.
