Computer Operator
Definition of Occupation
Oversees computer's hardware, operating system and application software as it processes data. Ensures the efficient use of the equipment. Starts and stops operating system, monitors and controls batch flow. Monitors operating system console and central processing unit for system or network failures, diagnoses problems and interacts with computer system to implement system or network recovery. May work with mainframes, minicomputers, or networks of personal computers. Tasks vary with size of system, the equipment used and needs of employer. In some companies/institutions may also oversee peripheral (related) equipment such as printers, plotters, disk and tape drives. May supervise/train peripheral equipment operators. Employed in large data centers such as those in data processing service industries, government agencies, educational institutions and large corporations.
