Definition of Occupation

Designs new styles of clothing for women, men and children. May specialize in coats, suits, dresses, swimwear, sportswear, lingerie, casual separates etc. Other design specialties include: uniforms, dance, exercise and sporting apparel, costume design and specialty apparel such as bridal or religious garments. Most work for apparel manufacturers, designer licensees or pattern companies creating and adapting fashions for mass production. Some employed by large department stores or the entertainment industry. A few work for exclusive specialty shops designing original garments. About one-third self-employed.
