English/Literature Professor
Definition of Occupation
Many teach literature and literary criticism/theory; they may give courses in understanding literature or literary surveys and/or specialize in a writer, period, genre or other field. Others teach various types of writing--from introductory/remedial composition or English as a second language (ESL) to advanced creative/expository writing or composition theory. In either group, may do research and publish although this is less of a requirement in 2-year institutions than in 4-year colleges and universities.NOTE: More and more teaching is performed by adjuncts hired and paid to teach individual courses.
