Microbiologist  

Definition of Occupation

Studies microscopic forms of life such as bacteria, viruses, yeasts, protozoa, algae and human cells. Examines their structure, growth, interactions and their critical role in bioremediation, biotechnology, disease, food processing, agriculture, community health, animal husbandry, cell regulation and the natural environment. May specialize in one type of microorganism (e.g. bacteria) and/or one area of application (e.g. the environment). (Molecular biology is by far the most popular specialization.) Applications in many fields including medical, veterinary, food, agricultural, industrial, environmental and general microbiology. The work of microbiologists often overlaps with that of Biochemist/Molecular Biologist.
