Aircraft Maintenance Technician  

Definition of Occupation

Inspects, services, repairs, tests and overhauls various aircraft components and systems. AMTs are licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Unlicensed technicians must work under the supervision of a licensed AMT. May work on the airframe (fuselage, wings, landing gear etc.) or the powerplant (engines and propellers). Most have dual airframe/powerplant (A/P) licensure. Some work only on one kind of aircraft or specialize in hydraulics, landing gear, brakes etc. About 60 percent work at large terminals and overhaul bases. Others have jobs in independent repair facilities, aircraft assembly firms, federal government and general aviation.
