Definition of Occupation

Prepares, analyzes and verifies the accuracy of financial documents in order to advise and inform clients. Sets up accounting systems, conducts audits, does cost accounting, provides tax advisory services, prepares financial reports for corporations, nonprofits, government agencies and individuals. Those certified by the state are called Certified Public Accountants (CPAs). May be self-employed or work for professional service firm. Often specializes in one aspect of accounting such as taxes, forensic accounting, auditing, assurance services, environmental accounting, information systems assessment, design of accounting and data processing systems, or consulting.

DO NOT CONFUSE with tax preparers who have more limited functions.
